These High Profile Players
have Cornered
the Throwback Jersey Market!
Whether it’s basketball, football, baseball or hockey,
professional sports figures are way into the throwback jersey
scene. Many have established collections of the ever-popular
throwback jerseys that would rival local sporting goods
stores.
The reasons for collecting throwbacks are as different as
the sports they play. Some for fashion – they are attracted by
the colors and designs. Others for what they represent – a
tribute to teams and players from past seasons.
Whatever the reason, throwback jerseys are hot with the
professional sports crowd. Milwaukee Bucks’ Mo Williams admits
to a collection of more than 20 throwback jerseys. But this is
nothing compared to his former teammate DeShawn Stevenson of
the Orland Magic.
Stevenson has stopped counting the number of throwbacks in
his collection. But he spent more than $100,000 last year
buying throwback jerseys – you do the math! That would be over
300 jerseys if they averaged $300 apiece. That would take quite
a closet to hang them all.
Both Williams and Stevenson look for throwback jerseys that
make a connection – favorite teams, special players, and
special moments in history.
Kobe Bryant, Lakers star, has more than 50 throwback jerseys
in his collection. His pride and joy is his dad’s jersey, Joe
“Jellybean” Bryant, form his days with the 76ers.
San Antonio Spurs’ forward Malik Rose owns a closet
full of throwback jerseys. One of his favorites – a New Orlean
Saints Archie Manning jersey.
Let’s not forget our MLB collectors, like Cliff Floyd of the
New York Mets. Floyd has over 100 throwback jerseys in his
closet. His collection includes throwbacks from retired stars
such as Moses Malone, Billy Cunningham, Oscar Robertson, and
Joe Bryant.
This list has just scratched the surface of the sports stars
that hold these throwback jerseys in high esteem. Throwbacks
are a collectors dream – functional and fashionable!
