A throwback, also known as a throwback jersey, has become a fashion statement for the urban crowd.    Color and fashion are as important as the team and player for this fashion conscious crowd. 

The urban fashion craze continues strong, with the latest trend reflecting fashion color throwbacks with a matching pair of sports shoes.  

However, a strong emerging trend is one of a more traditional sports fan look.  Nostalgia is playing a bigger role in throwback sales.  The throwback jerseys reflected more of a 70’s or 80’s look and feel, but are now going back to the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s period.  Nostalgia is king! 

The pendulum has swung from a fashion based throwback look to a more authentic and real look.  This is where the throwback jersey market is heading – emphasis placed on authentic detail and style rather than colorful fashion.  

Both the urban crowd and avid sports fans are demanding exactness in their throwback jersey purchases.  Kids that normally scooped up the lower priced throwbacks are now passing on them.  They are stepping up to the $300+ jerseys knowing that they are more authentic. 

Retailers are also stocking the higher priced throwback lines as they see their customers shift from more moderate priced jerseys to the high-end versions.  Previously, they had been reluctant to carry a big inventory of the more expensive throwback lines. 

Mitchell and Ness is the premier provider of high-end throwbacks and prides itself in both the authenticity and detailing categories.  Their throwback jerseys are priced in the $200 - $400 range. 

However, other throwback producers are starting to see the changing trends.  They are venturing into this high-end market with their own classic throwback lines. 

Bill Walton, NBA announcer and former player, believes that nostalgia and a real respect for sports history will drive the throwback market to new heights.    He feels that the fans want the chance to say thank you and pay respect to their favorite sports heroes.  We think he’s right on the money!
