Hats for the Caps For Kids (CFK) Program
The
Caps For Kids Program is a nonprofit organization that provides
sports hats and scarves to children and young people who lose
their hair from chemotherapy.
These sports hats are signed by professional athletes and
entertainers and make the hats even more meaningful to the
youngsters.
The
program was founded in 1993 by Dr. Stephen Heinrich of
Children’s Hospital in New Orleans.
Since then it has donated sports
hats and scarves through 70 different children’s hospitals
throughout the U.S. and Canada.
The
Caps For Kids organization ships autographed hats to their
participating hospitals. Once
the chemotherapy begins for the children or young adults, they
are allowed to choose a sports hat from the collection.
If that special hat is not found at the location, a
nationwide search of other participating hospitals is made to
find that perfect hat.
The
program relies solely on donations from individuals, hat
manufacturers and sports teams.
Hat World was the program’s first corporate sponsor. The Hat World / Lids team has donated thousands of hats to
the program over the years.
Caps
For Kids volunteers solicit major league sports teams and high
visibility performers to autograph the sports hats.
Once autographed, they deliver the requested hats to the
network of participating hospitals.
Individuals
can support Caps For Kids through direct donations at all LIDS,
HATWORLD and HATZONE stores or by sending donations to: Caps For
Kids, 200 Henry Clay Avenue, New Orleans LA 70118, (504)
891-4277 or (504) 896-9849 (Fax).
