– How Did the Whole Throwback Jersey Craze Begin?
Throwback
jerseys, sometimes called throwbacks, are replicas of sports team
jerseys from the past. These
throwbacks are produced for all
the sports -- whether professional, college or even high school.
The
jerseys usually represent a famous team, special player, or a
memorable event in sports history.
The original goal of the manufacturers and the sports leagues
was to record the history of their sport through the sports jerseys of
the period.
So,
was it the sports fans that sparked the latest throwback craze?
Probably not! The
original target market was white, middle aged males who wanted to
recapture their youth.
How
about a wave of nostalgia from the Baby Boomer population?
Not really!
So
– how did the whole crazy throwback jersey trend begin?
Believe
it or not, it most likely started when Sean “P. Diddy” Combs
hosted the American Music Awards.
A Hip-Hop superstar introduced throwback jerseys to the fashion
world!
P.
Diddy wore a Philadelphia Phillies jacket and a Hank Aaron throwback
jersey during the introductions. However, he changed into different throwback sports apparel
at every commercial.
He modeled almost the entire line of throwback jerseys, jackets
and hats from Mitchell and Ness that night.
The
throwback jersey fashion trend was born!
Think
about it – when was the last time you didn’t see at least one of
the members of your favorite rap group sporting a throwback jersey.
Athletes
soon jumped on board, too. The
likes of Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal and Allen Iverson started
sporting throwbacks. These
sports superstars were seen donning their new throwback fashions at
posh restaurants, social events, and on the covers of all the hip
magazines.
Interesting
to think that Shaquille O’Neal’s first throwback was a
reproduction of Iverson’s 1996-97 rookie jersey.
Kobe Bryant sports a Sixers jersey – his father’s old
number and team.
