Jersey Supplier – Russell is Out; Majestic is In
The
Montreal Expos jersey manufacturer
for the past seasons has been a company by the name of Russell
Corporation. Russell
manufactures a number of jerseys and sportswear lines under brand
names such as Spalding and JERZEES.
The
company also had the contract to produce MLB jerseys for 15 of the
big-league teams. That
was until they lost the contract with MLB at the end of the 2004
season.
The
new contract was awarded to Majestic Athletic, a small family run
business in Pennsylvania. Majestic
will supply all major league teams with jerseys and uniforms for the
next five seasons.
Majestic
has been producing replica Expos jerseys for the past few years, even
though they did not have the contract for the official MLB jerseys.
However, with the move of the Montreal Expos to Washington,
D.C., they expect their stockpile of Expos jerseys to eventually end
up in the discount bins.
Majestic
had been cutting back production of the Expos jerseys for some time
though. The rumors that
the Expos were moving from Montreal had put a damper on jersey sales.
But
the company’s good fortune of supplying the official MLB jerseys for
the Washington Nationals, the name of the new D.C. team, will more
than make up for the loss on the old Expos jerseys remaining in stock.
MLB
jersey sales are usually brisk for teams that have moved into a new
market. Early signs
indicate that this is the case for the Expos new home.
